Fugazi

Prophets of da City

Slant 6

Elevate

London Brixton Academy 13/5/95

This was one mad gig. You could tell tell it was going to be by the crowd waiting outside to get in. There were skaters, skin-heads, punks, metal-heads, indie kids, goths, the works, it was so mixed it was untrue, but that was cool.

The first 2 bands Slant 6 and Elevate got typical support band response, i.e. polite applause between songs, but that was about it. Both bands were good, but they suffered from being relatively unknown (in England at least).

Next was Prophets Of Da City, they were added late to the bill and seemed a strange support act but they got the crowd moving. There seemed a few puzzled looks around, i.e. people thinking, "I came here to see a hard-core band not some @*#$ hip hop band." However the Prophets were amazing. I would imagine that they would have turned several "non-believers" onto this style of music.

Then at last the band that everyone was waiting to see, Fugazi. For those that don't know the Brixton Academy, it's a fairly large indoor venue which has several barriers dotted about to stop to much pushing. I was lucky, I got behind the furthest forward centre one. Immediately in front of me was the mosh pit, then on the stage were our heroes! With the opening chords of the first song the mosh pit came alive and people started crowd surfing and diving off the barriers.

The new Fugazi album Red Medicine had only been released the previous Monday, so the band kept songs from it to a minimum. It should be noted though that the songs they did play from it still had the crowd jumping. The majority of the songs were taken from the previous album "In On The Kill Taker, but other oldies were played such as Waiting Room, of course, with slightly altered lyrics. Fugazi only stopped twice the whole night. The first time to go off to give us an encore, and the second when they had really finished. These guys really know how to play live. The 2 vocal styles of the singers come across even better live than on album, this is one live act well worth checking out. I can't wait to see them again!
